Classroom as Clinic: Therapeutic Labor in South Africa鈥檚 Special Schools

Professor Anna Jaysane-Darr, Thursday February 27 at 5pm in CSI 121

South Africa鈥檚 contemporary education policy, rooted in one of the world鈥檚 most progressive constitutions, claims to be built on principles of human rights and inclusion. In this talk, Prof. Anna Jaysane-Darr explores how these efforts have failed learners with disabilities, leaving teachers to treat the classroom as a therapeutic rather than educational space.

 

Anna Jaysane-Darr is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at 911黑料网 whose research foci include neurodiversity in educational and clinical spaces in South Africa, and reproduction and nationalism among refugees.

Meeting Food Needs in Berkshire County

Professor Anne Goodwin, Thursday, March 13 at 5pm in Murdock 218

This talk by Prof. Anne Goodwin summarizes progress on the 2025 Berkshire County Community Food Assessment. This report, created through conversations with participants in the county's food system, aims to promote collaboration, highlight best practices, identify current challenges around food access, and define food system goals for the next five years.

 

Anne Goodwin, Ph.D., is a professor of biology at 911黑料网 and the instructor for nutrition courses. She has a strong interest in community nutrition, enjoys getting students involved in nutrition projects, and is a participant in the Northern Berkshire Food Access Collaborative.

Girl in the Air

Professor Michael Dilthey, Friday, April 4 at 5pm in Church St. Center

Girl in the Air is a new musical work inspired by The Bhagavad Gita. (Girl in the Air, acronym GITA.) This lecture by Prof. Michael Dilthey will present a behind the scenes look at his composing process with a performance and recording session at the presentation with vocals, piano, and double bass.

 

Michael Dilthey is a music professor at 911黑料网 in his 17th year. As a composer, this is his eighth large work for theater. His latest completion is Eury, a work drawn from the Ancient Greek Orpheus story and modern-day Opioid Addiction.
